Knitting for the homeless

The photo below shows members of the Tarneit Skies Craft and Knitters groups showing scarves, beanies and blankets that they have knitted for needy people.

Here is a link to some more photos of the knitters group.

The knitted garments are given to an organisation called KOGO. The contact with KOGO is co-ordinated by Colleen Hosking.

Here are some details of KOGO supplied by Colleen:

KOGO was first formed in 2004 by some friends who found the winter of that year was extremely cold. That year they knitted 180 scarves with their own wool and distributed them to Emerald Hill Mission to those in need. The project has continued to grow with over 65,000 hand knitted items being distributed to over 80 agencies in Victoria.

The ladies of Tarneit Skies Chatters and Knitters Group have been knitting for KOGO over the last 4 years and have donated some 2500 items. These ladies do a magnificent job in helping the needy. The biggest problem is keeping them supplied with yarn so they can keep those needles clicking.

In 2009 KOGO, as well as making scarves and beanies, also took on the task of knitting woollies and blankets for the Bushfire survivors.

Some of the other organisations helped by our ladies through KOGO are Crisis accommodation, Emergency relief, Homelessness services, Organisations dealing with children at risk, Outreach Missions, eg Sacred Heart Mission etc.
