Norfolk Island Trip

Introduction

Before visiting Norfolk Island it is useful to have an idea of its history, in particular the three different phases of settlement. Click on this link for a brief description of the three settlement phases.

We left Tarniet Skies by bus at 11:00 AM, bound for Tullamarine Airport. Our plane touched down at Norfolk Island Airport at 5:30 PM (Melbourne Time).

We settled into our hotel rooms, had dinner, and while some travellers returned to their rooms others sat by the pool, chatted …

… and surveyed the surroundings …

Shopping
After breakfast on our first full day on the island - Saturday - we had a free morning, so most of us investigated the local (Burnt Pine) shopping centre …

… or waited while our “better halves” did the investigating …

The local vegetation is quite luxuriant …

The video below shows a panorama of down town Burnt Pine ...

... the major town on the island. There was a surprising amount of traffic throught the town, as the only way to get from one side of the island to the other one was by Burnt Pine (all roads lead to Burnt Pine).

Introductory Tour of the Island

The Introductory Tour included Kingston, the major site of the convict settlements.

The video below shows Kingston and its picturesque setting by the sea ...

We were served afternoon tea …

… in luxuriant surroundings …

We visited St Barnabus Chapel ...

From Norfolk Island

... which has an attractive interior ...

... and a beautiful rose window ...

The church was built by the Melanesian Mission that was granted land on the island and was hearquartered there between 1867 and 1920. Our guides indicated that the granting of land to the Mission was a sore point with the islanders.

Convict for a Night Dinner

This was our first themed dinner. We all dressed up in convict garb ...

The sergeant who was in charge of us picked out a “loud mouth” who had to say grace (Les) a “stirrer” who had to stir the soup (Bruce) …

... and Shirley was a "soup wench" ...

The night concluded with a game that was an interesting version of “pass the parcel” in this instance a rolling pin and some hats …

... Bev was the winner ...
